I’m a PhD student at Durham University, researching the flow of magma within dykes – the planar conduits that feed basaltic fissure eruptions. I’ll be using a combined approach of fieldwork, collecting samples from ancient, solidified dykes in Scotland and Tenerife, and laboratory analogue experiments, which will help interpret the textures within the samples. The aim is to develop a method to investigate changes in flow conditions through time, helping to understand the evolution of hazards at the surface, such as lava flows.
