I am Savanna van Mesdag, and I’m studying an IAPETUS2-funded PhD at the University of Glasgow and the University of Stirling. My research focusses on the geodiversity and biodiversity of anthropogenic substrate sites. How do anthropogenic substrates, including colliery spoil, paper mill sludge and steel slag, support plants? Are the plants that grow on such substrates affected positively and/or negatively by their growth substrate? What kind of invertebrate species exist on such sites? These are questions that I hope to answer during my PhD, along with many more. Throughout my PhD, I will continue to carry out fieldwork and labwork, as well as practising valuable data storage and analysis skills.
